How dental cover works here

Spain's public health system (Sistema Nacional de Salud) treats dentistry as mostly outside its core coverage: it typically pays for extractions and a limited set of paediatric and oral-health-check services, but not fillings, crowns, root canals, implants or orthodontics. That gap is why private dental insurance ("seguro dental") is common, alongside "cuadros médicos" — discounted-price networks with no reimbursement but also no waiting period.

Most seguro dental policies apply a waiting period ("periodo de carencia") of 2 to 6 months before covering anything beyond a first check-up and cleaning, and separate, often longer waiting periods for orthodontics or prosthetics. Coverage is usually structured as a fixed price list at partner clinics rather than a cash reimbursement, which keeps monthly premiums low compared to other European markets.

What to check before you sign up

  • Whether the policy is a true insurance (reimbursement/coverage) or a discount-only "cuadro médico" — the monthly price difference is usually explained by this.
  • Which clinics are actually in-network near you — some insurers have far denser coverage in certain regions.
  • Whether orthodontics for children or adults is included at all, since it's frequently a separate, capped add-on.
  • Whether financing a single big treatment (like an implant) might work out cheaper than a year of premiums — see our financing comparison.
