How dental cover works here
Medicare, Australia's public health system, does not cover routine adult dental care. Instead, most people add "extras" (ancillary) cover to a private health insurance policy, which reimburses a percentage of the cost of general and major dental treatment up to an annual limit. Government-regulated Private Health Insurance rules set common minimum waiting periods across the whole industry: typically 2 months for general dental (check-ups, fillings) and 12 months for major dental (crowns, root canals, dentures).
Because these waiting periods are largely standardised by regulation, the real differences between insurers come down to the annual limit, the percentage reimbursed per item, and whether the insurer runs a preferred-provider network — like Bupa's Members First or HCF's More For Teeth — that reduces out-of-pocket "gap" payments.
Typical treatment costs
| Treatment | Typical cost, no extras cover |
|---|---|
| Check-up & clean | AU$150 – $280 |

| Crown | AU$1,300 – $2,600 |
| Single implant | AU$3,500 – $6,500 |
| Invisalign-style orthodontics | AU$4,500 – $9,000 |
Costs vary between capital cities and regional areas, and between individual practices.

- Whether your preferred dentist is part of the insurer's no/low-gap network.
- The exact annual limit and per-item reimbursement percentage — these vary more than waiting periods do.
- Whether it's cheaper overall to bundle extras with hospital cover or buy extras-only.
- Whether switching insurers resets your waiting periods — it usually does unless you're transferring equivalent cover.
